Pack
Test: Pack Test dates will be announced during the class. The Pack Test will be held on the Michigan Tech campus approximately four weeks after the fire class has been completed (to comply with the Forest Service’s requirement of 4 weeks of training for the test). The Pack Test consists of a 3-mile hike with 45-lb. pack in 45 min. Hiking or work boots are required for the Pack Test. Causal shores or tennis shoes are unacceptable. Comfortable clothing should be worn and you should not eat a large meal before taking the test.
Qualifications
and Employment: Persons successfully completing the training will receive a certificate. Qualification as a Type 2 Firefighter (FFT2) Trainee requires a physical fitness test, called a Pack Test (there is no extra fee for this test).
Those completing both the required training and Pack Test will be eligible to receive a qualification card, certifying them as Type 2 Firefighter Trainees (Important: The qualification card is a requirement for participation as a firefighter on incidents in and out of state for all federal and many state agencies.)
Completion of this course is not a guarantee of employment as a firefighter. In the past, however, persons completing this training have become members of hand crews that have been dispatched from Michigan to incidents occurring nationwide and in Canada. Crew assignments are for two weeks. Participants must be in good health and physical condition. They must also be able to work in very difficult and stressful situations.
